White Copy Paper

White copy paper comes in two different types. Paper used for non critical work such as the informal print out of an email or paper used to scribble something on. The other type of paper is one that will be used in formal documents, presentations or for the printing of a photograph.

The two types differ in a metric called “Grams per square meter” or the GSM. The GSM determines the weight of the paper, and therefore the quality of the print on it. It also feels thicker. Informal white copy paper needs to be around 50 GSM at the most. To give you a point of reference, the GSM of the paper used in Newspapers can vary from 25-45 GSM.

For professional printing, you need to use very high quality copy paper - around 100 GSM if you can get it. It costs more but the print quality is spectacular. It creates an excellent impression.

White copy paper can even vary depending on the type of printer. Ink jet printers have a matte finish that causes the ink to dry quickly, whereas this is a less of a consideration for laser printing. In general, inkjet paper tends to be slightly cheaper.

White copy paper is the backbone of the operations of any office and a proper understanding of it is definitely useful.
